I envy people who commit suicide

So listen carefully girls and boys, because I’m about to tell you about life. Yes, life. Oh, the wonders and joys of modern society!

First, school. In school everything’s all smiles and glamour and no-one can wait to grow up and be free and independent! “What do you want to be when you grow up, sonny Jim?” “I want to be a doctor!” “Oh, how nice! And what about you, little Jane?” “I want to be an astronaut!” “Well, marvelous!” “I want to be a fireman!” and so on.

Damn stupid kids. But yeah, I used to be like that too. Everyone’s full of hopes and dreams when they’re kids and it’s all peaches and lollypops, isn’t it? What a joke.

… Then before you know it you’re stuck in some dead end job day in day out, trapped in your miniature cubicle, or behind a counter, or in your tiny office in front of a computer, coping with a tyrant boss, boring or annoying roommates, wasting away your days in some crappy apartment wondering how it all came to this, before crawling away into bed to escape it all. And that’s the punchline. Ta da! Brilliant, right?

But then, guess what, it gets even better! The alarm goes off, and we get to get up and do it all over again! Yes, sir, doesn’t that just put a smile on your face? Isn’t that just the apple to the pie? You get to do it every day for the next fifty years, then die. Yay! What fun! What wholesomeness! How so beautifully and superbly fulfilling! I could honestly not think of a better way to spend my time, than work for fifty years, worrying about bills, coping with this and that, while the people over there always seem to have the bigger house and the faster car and the perfect love-life, and then die. Excellent. But even the apparently “happy” people will have days where they just hate it all. Hell, more people are depressed than most would believe.

Know what I think? All those people who committed suicide as teens must actually be the most intelligent people in the world. I don’t understand why people see it as such a tragedy, and “feel sorry” for them. What’s to feel sorry for? They got away from it all. They’re free. No more heart-breakers, no more monotonous, repetitive, tedium. No more hassle. Not for them. Just peace, and bliss. Just quiet stillness, undisturbed, perfect, rest. Forever. Want to know what I think? It’s the living I pity. There is no sadder or more tragic a case than the person who decides to go on living, deluding themselves that it will somehow get better. Well know what? It doesn’t. Sure, it might. You might also win the lottery tomorrow. But you probably won’t. So sure, it might get better. But it probably won’t. And that’s the truth of things. The universe does not give a single damn about how you feel or about what’s fair or not, and no matter what you do we all die anyway, so why not just cut to the chase? Why bother continue to go through it all?

I said it, and I will say it again: the dead are the luckiest people in the whole universe. And the people who commit suicide made the best choice they could ever make. So there you go. Welcome to the real world. Not all it’s chalked up to be, really, is it?
